Overview
Located near Dysart in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, Lake Vermont has been a key long‑term project for Thiess since the construction of the mine’s original infrastructure in 2007, followed by commencement of mining operations in 2008
Achieving world-class coal recovery through operational excellence
Thiess has continued to expand its role at the operation over nearly two decades, supporting Jellinbah Group with full‑service mining, engineering, operational delivery and rehabilitation. In 2012, Thiess was awarded an expanded contract to double annual production from 4.6 to 10.7 million tonnes, supported by industry‑leading plant, equipment and specialised extraction methods. Our scope includes coal mining, clearing and grubbing, topsoil removal, drill and blast, overburden removal and rehabilitation of final landforms.
Thiess also provides all mobile plant and equipment and serves as the statutory operator for the project. Through the Thiess Sedgman JV, the team designed and built twin state‑of‑the‑art CHPPs, each with a capacity of 11.2 million tonnes per annum, further strengthening processing capability.
Thiess' long‑standing partnership with Jellinbah Group has continued to grow. In 2025, the business secured a A$2.3 billion contract extension to June 2028, continuing the delivery of full mining services, asset management for fixed and mobile plant, rehabilitation, and operation of the handling and preparation plant, train load‑out and mining camp.
