Overview

Anglo American’s Australian coal business is the second largest in Australia and third largest global export metallurgical coal producer.

In 2005 Anglo Coal entered into an alliance with the Thiess Sedgman Joint Venture (TSJV) to deliver the $346 million Dawson project.

Thiess has a long history and unrivalled experience operating at the Dawson Mine, having been part of the original joint venture in 1962 to establish and operate what was then known as Moura Mine. It was from here that Thiess exported the first shipment of Queensland’s high-quality coking coal to Japan.

In 2005 Anglo Coal entered into an alliance with the Thiess Sedgman Joint Venture (TSJV) to deliver the $346 million Dawson project, the largest design and construct contract awarded in the Australian coal industry at the time. The massive upgrade and expansion set a new industry benchmark resulting in the design, construct and commissioning of the largest coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP) in Australia.

Thiess resumed operations at Dawson in February 2015, undertaking the open-cut mining of the existing pit at Dawson South. In 2018, Anglo American awarded Thiess a 36-month contract extension to continue delivering coal mining, overburden removal and run of mine rehandling services at the mine.

The mine produces coking, soft coking and thermal coal.
