Overview
Thiess has operated at the Wahana coal mine in South Kalimantan, Indonesia, since 2007, delivering full mining services for Bayan Resources. The operation includes mine planning, drill and blast, environmental and water management, and mining and pit hauling. Over this long‑term partnership, Thiess has played a key role in optimising resource recovery and extending the mine’s reserves to deliver ongoing value for the client.
Wahana showcases Thiess’ ability to deliver flexible, sustainable mining solutions while building strong partnerships with clients and communities across South Kalimantan.
Wahana is a unique operation in which Thiess has mined two adjoining pits for two different clients: Bayan Resources and PT Cakrawala Langit Sejahtera (CLS), which operates the Arutmin Satui pits. This dual‑operation model demonstrates Thiess’ capability to deliver flexible, tailored mining solutions across adjacent resources.
In November 2021, Thiess secured a three‑year A$220 million contract renewal to continue full mining services at Wahana. This extension recognised the strength of the long‑standing partnership with Bayan Resources and Thiess’ ability to deliver safe, sustainable and competitive mining solutions.
Further strengthening this relationship, Thiess secured additional contract extensions in 2022 across Wahana and the neighbouring CLS Satui operation, with a combined value of A$480 million. These extensions support ongoing load and haul, drill and blast, and pit dewatering activities, and include initiatives to enhance productivity through fleet management technology and drone‑assisted safety improvements. The team also supports local communities through ESG programs, including construction of a water treatment plant in Sejahtera Mulia village.
Most recently, in February 2025, Thiess was awarded a 16‑month Wahana East Extension mining contract, continuing full mining services including load and haul, drill and blast and pit dewatering. This extension recognises Thiess’ strong operational record and ongoing commitment to safe, sustainable and community‑aligned delivery. As part of the new scope, Thiess will introduce circular‑economy‑based waste management initiatives and provide entrepreneurial training to support local businesses.
The project continues to highlight Thiess’ strong capability and presence in Indonesia, supported by a team focused on safe operations, community engagement, diversity and long‑term client value.
