Overview

Located 80 kilometres north‑west of Mount Isa in Queensland, the Anthill Project was an open cut mine producing copper.

Thiess has a long history operating in the Mount Isa region dating back to the 1960s.

In December 2021, Thiess was awarded a three‑year contract to provide mining services at the Anthill Project, including operating and maintaining two mining fleets to support Austral Resources’ copper production requirements.

Thiess successfully mobilised the project and undertook site preparation and civil works over Christmas and during a global pandemic. Mining commenced in early 2022.

From project inception, Thiess applied industry best practice to mining operations with uncompromising safety and environmental standards.

Thiess delivered a fully resourced load and haul service, demonstrating our experience across all aspects of daily site life, including people and their health and safety, mine management systems and processes, asset management, and environmental and community management.

The Anthill Project sat within Austral Resources’ Lady Annie Project and was expected to produce more than 40,000 tonnes of copper over four years. Ore was mined from two pits and processed at the nearby Mount Kelly processing facility.

Throughout delivery at the Anthill Project, our team continued its focus on building strong community relationships to achieve long‑term social, environmental and economic outcomes.
