Overview
The Ukhaa Khudag (UHG) Coal Mine, located in Mongolia’s South Gobi Desert, is the most remote operation in the Thiess global mining portfolio. Situated approximately 560 kilometres south of Ulaanbaatar and 240 kilometres from the Chinese border, UHG represents one of the world’s most logistically challenging mining environments.
Operating in one of the world’s most remote and extreme environments, UHG showcases our capability to deliver safe, reliable and locally led mining solutions that create long‑term value for Mongolia
Thiess commenced operations at UHG in 2008, beginning from a greenfield site and undertaking one of the longest and most complex mobilisation programs globally. The initial haul truck fleet was assembled at a border town in China and then driven for three and a half days across the desert to reach site. Extreme conditions, including severe summer dust storms and winter temperatures falling to minus 40°C, continue to test both people and equipment. Successfully managing such extremes highlights Thiess’ capability in mobilising and operating remote mine sites.
Thiess delivered full mining operations at UHG for many years, including pit dewatering, drill and blast, overburden removal, coal loading and hauling, mine planning, engineering, and fleet operation and maintenance. The operation has produced high‑quality metallurgical coal that supports regional and international markets.
As part of its enduring commitment to Mongolia, Thiess prioritises local capability building. More than 90 per cent of the workforce is Mongolian, supported through structured training programs in operations, mine planning, technical services and supervisory roles.
In December 2023, Thiess was awarded a new five‑year contract extension by Mongolian Mining Corporation (MMC), continuing the company’s long partnership that began in 2009. Under this agreement, Thiess will provide asset management services including strategic planning, supply chain management and maintenance across MMC’s South Gobi operations. The extension reinforces Thiess’ commitment to safety, sustainability and ongoing community investment in the South Gobi region, including health and education initiatives.
