Overview

Located five kilometres south of Muswellbrook in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Mount Arthur South is an open cut operation producing thermal coal. Thiess has a long and established history in the Hunter Valley, spanning more than 80 years.

Our long‑standing partnership at Mount Arthur South reflects our commitment to safe, inclusive and sustainable mining, delivering value for our client and the Hunter Valley community

Thiess has supported BHP at Mount Arthur South since 2017, initially delivering load and haul services before expanding into additional mining activities including overburden and coal mining, mine design, planning and scheduling, and drill and blast operations across the southern end of the site. In 2019, the scope increased further when Thiess assumed statutory responsibility for operating the Ayredale and Roxburgh pits as mine operator.

In 2024, Thiess secured a six‑year contract extension with BHP valued at AU$1.9 billion, continuing the delivery of mining services and the operation and maintenance of mining equipment to support BHP’s production requirements. The extension will also see Thiess work closely with BHP and the local community to support the site’s planned closure program.

Thiess’ long‑standing presence in the Hunter Valley is marked by strong community engagement, a focus on workforce diversity and a commitment to local employment. Programs such as Thiess’ award‑winning MASITE initiative have helped increase Indigenous and female participation across the workforce, demonstrating the shared values between Thiess and BHP in supporting an inclusive local economy.
