Overview
Located in Queensland’s resource‑rich Bowen Basin, the QCoal Northern Hub comprises the Sonoma, Cows, Drake and Jax mines near Collinsville and produces hard coking and thermal coal. Thiess has operated at the Northern Hub since 2007, providing full mining services and holding statutory responsibility for the mine and coal handling preparation plant (CHPP).

Across changing market conditions, Thiess has focused on operational discipline, expert planning and optimised mining sequencing to deliver consistent coal volumes. The site leadership team has implemented a series of productivity and cost‑improvement programs to increase efficiency while maintaining safe, reliable performance.
Thiess’ long partnership with QCoal has been strengthened through successive contract extensions. In 2022, Thiess secured a three‑year, $450 million extension to continue delivering all mining, maintenance, asset management and rehabilitation services across the Northern Hub.
In 2025, Thiess was awarded a further three‑year contract extension valued at $590 million, with an additional three‑year option. This agreement continues Thiess’ full mining service scope, including statutory control of the site, all mining activities, maintenance, asset management and progressive rehabilitation.
Thiess has been part of the Collinsville community since 1995 and remains a major regional employer. The team works closely with local stakeholders to support long‑term economic participation, community initiatives and regional procurement opportunities.
A key example of Thiess’ community commitment includes helping Collinsville residents secure more than $150,000 in funding to establish a permanent memorial honouring the town’s historic working pit ponies, marking 25 years since their decommissioning.
