Located in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, the Kapuas Bara Utama (KBU) project is a six‑year mining operation that reinforces Thiess’ long-standing presence in the region and its ongoing commitment to delivering sustainable, productive mining solutions.
We will focus on our empowerment program for village-owned enterprises, providing fair and equal business opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
Thiess has operated in Indonesia for more than 35 years and has built a strong reputation for providing end‑to‑end mining services across diverse geographies and commodities. At KBU, Thiess will deliver a full scope of mining activities, including site establishment, technical services, overburden removal and water management, supporting the client’s operational and development objectives.
Securing the US$330 million KBU mining contract demonstrates the confidence placed in Thiess as a trusted partner. Mobilisation will commence in early 2025, strengthening Thiess’ strategic focus on expanding its capabilities and partnerships across key markets in Asia.
Thiess’ long history in the region is underpinned by a commitment to meaningful engagement with local communities. At KBU, Thiess will implement an empowerment program for village‑owned enterprises, creating fair and equal business opportunities for local suppliers, alongside employment pathways for a diverse local workforce.
The project will also see Thiess continue its Clean River Program in collaboration with the community and the International River Foundation, as well as working with the client to upgrade and maintain nearby public road infrastructure.
Through the KBU partnership, Thiess continues to deliver value to clients while contributing positively to regional development, reinforcing its position as a leading mining services provider in the Asia‑Pacific region.
