Thiess welcomes Sam to its Chilean operations

With more than 25 years of operational experience that includes working on some of South America’s largest mining projects, Sam Izaguirre has brought his expertise to Thiess.

A seasoned executive, Sam was appointed as Thiess’ General Manager South America in March. It’s the second time he’s called Chile home, having previously lived in the country while working on the original Centinela Concentrator.

Sam’s talent for project delivery and business development has seen him and his family live and travel extensively across North and South America.

“I feel fortunate to have worked across a range of industries that includes mining and metals, infrastructure and telecommunications,” Sam said.

“The people I’ve worked alongside have been instrumental in my growth and success.”

“It’s my belief diversity drives innovation and change. I’m excited to be working at Thiess where data driven insights inform decision making to create optimised solutions for our clients.”

In his new role, Sam is responsible for the stewardship of the mining business for South America with a specific focus on business and operational governance, risk and compliance.

What’s the most unusual request you’ve had on the job (Thiess/within the industry)?

Truly, I can't think of one as my ability to adapt to change and empathy will rarely see things as unusual.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given and by whom?

“Always close the loop” by an ex-Project Director.

If you could choose three people (dead or alive) over for a dinner party, who would they be and why?
Barack Obama, Muhammad Ali, Mario Moreno “Cantinflas”, three people with diverse backgrounds who used their diversity and professions as a platform to help or speak for others. Plus, I also admire their ability to express themselves.

Welcome Sam to the team!
