Overview
Peak Downs and Caval Ridge are two open cut coking coal mines owned by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), located near Moranbah in Queensland’s Bowen Basin. Thiess first began supporting BMA at Peak Downs in 2017, supplying FleetCo hire equipment and maintenance services to the operation.
This scope of work developed into a $440 million contract to provide mining services
This initial scope grew into a $440 million contract to deliver mining services across both Peak Downs and Caval Ridge, including overburden removal, continuation of FleetCo asset solutions and the mobilisation of five fleets featuring four 600‑tonne Liebherr 996B excavators and an 800‑tonne Liebherr 9800 excavator, supported by Caterpillar 793 and 797 trucks.
Under the three‑and‑a‑half‑year contract, Thiess safely delivered:
- 90 million bank cubic metres (bcms) at Peak Downs
- 45 million bcms at Caval Ridge
In 2020, Thiess was awarded a 12‑month extension to continue delivering mining services at Caval Ridge.
Thiess’ strong operational performance at Caval Ridge led to a further contract extension in November 2022. The new agreement, commencing 1 December 2022, has a potential term of up to five years and revenue valued at up to $600 million. Under this extension, Thiess continues to provide mining services and operate and maintain mining equipment to support BMA’s production requirements.
Across both sites, Thiess maintains a strong focus on diversity and inclusive employment practices, with the Caval Ridge workforce comprising almost 30% female and 10% Indigenous employees. Thiess also contributes to regional economic value through local jobs and supply opportunities and continues to support the communities where the teams live and work
