Mt Owen wins Health Excellence Award

Mt Owen's life-changing Positively Healthy Program has won the Health Excellence category at the New South Wales Mining HSEC Awards this week.

The awards celebrate excellence and innovation in health and safety, environmental management and community engagement.
Mt Owen was awarded for its Positively Healthy Program - a practical initiative to promote and support good health amongst the Mt Owen team.
The program's vision aligns with the NSW Mining Council's goal to reshape the health of the industry - 'one kilo at a time, one miner at a time, one year at a time'.
In the past 12 months, 312 Mt Owen team members participated in the program and lost more than 500 kilograms collectively.

Mt Owen Health & Safety Manager Karin Stemmer was joined by Project Manager Jeroen Hendriks and Health & Safety Advisor Hannah Richardson in accepting the Health Excellence Award on behalf of the team.
“We are really humbled to have won,” Karin said.
“We weren’t looking to just achieve great results over a short period – we’d achieved that with previous programs – or to turn our work teams into super athletes.
“This program has a long-term focus. It’s about putting a strategy into place to encourage our wider team to get involved in making small changes every day, and for us to provide an accessible tool to measure progress – individually, and as a site.
"What we didn’t expect was:

- To hear crib room food discussions change
- Healthy competition amongst teammates
- A commitment by our people to make significant lifestyle changes.

“You will have seen the impact of this program on Steve and Wadey – thank you for sharing your stories. It shows how life changing this initiative has been for our team.
“The Positively Healthy Program has simply become a part of what we do at Mt Owen and is a key step towards keeping Everyone Safe Everyday.
“Thank you again for the recognition of our team’s effort. We are very grateful.”
