Uncovering growth through innovation at Peak Downs

Our onsite Health & Safety teams are the heartbeat of our projects, providing around the clock support to our people and operations.

Uncovering growth through innovation at Peak Downs

We recently spoke to members of our Health, Safety, Environment and Training (HSET) team at Peak Downs in Queensland about the important role they play on site and how they are continually seeking new ways of ensuring everyone safe everyday.

Creating lasting value

“Everyone on site has a role to play in the areas of health and safety,” Peak Downs Manager for Health, Safety, Environment and Training Peter Cameron explains.

“Not just those who have it in their job titles.

“Our team spends a lot of our time mentoring and coaching our project teams so that they can be champions in these areas, even when we’re not around.”

Peter’s team sets high expectations for themselves. They listen with respect and value others’ contributions and expect the same in return.

“It fosters a culture of innovation. We’re always looking for ways we can grow and deliver lasting value for our project teams and clients.”

Unleashing your full potential

At Thiess, we strive to give our people access to new experiences and opportunities to grow.
“I’ve had the privilege of leading, coaching and mentoring our Peak Downs HSET team over the past couple of years,” Peter said.

“They are focused and committed professionals, and I could not be prouder of the contribution they make to our team and the wider project every day.”

Health and Safety Advisor Emily Bosca is one of the consummate professionals in the Peak Downs’ HSET team.

Returning to site after four years in a corporate office role, Emily reflects on her first six months at the project.

“Being back at site has given me a deeper appreciation of how my role contributes to the business and where I can add real value.

“It also allows for my time at home to be focused on catching up with family and friends.”

For Emily’s colleague and the team’s Administrator Kate Cavanagh, Peak Downs has given her the opportunity to gain open cut mine experience.

“Until now, I’ve only worked in an underground mine environment. It’s been interesting to see the differences operationally and culturally,” Kate explains.

“I’ve also been given opportunities and great support to learn new health and safety systems.”

Since joining Thiess, Kate has also been a part of the WIMARQ Mentoring Program opening her professional network up to a wide range of women in mining across Queensland.

“Joining the mentoring program was a big step out of my comfort zone, but it has been a great way to challenge myself and be inspired by so many of the amazing women who contribute to our industry.”
