Rod Emery inspires future surveyors through AREEA’s Bright Future STEM program
For eight years, Rod Emery has built his career at Thiess as a surveyor in the Group Technical Services team. He values the role for its mix of outdoor exploration, problem-solving and innovation. From operating drones and analysing spatial data to collaborating with on-site teams, surveying combines practical fieldwork with technical precision. This balance, and the constant innovation in the discipline, is what Rod is passionate about sharing.
For more than a year, Rod has supported AREEA’s Bright Future STEM program in Brisbane. Launched in 2019 by the Australian Resources & Energy Employer Association (AREEA), the program engages Year 5 and 6 students across Australia to spark interest in STEM. It aims to raise awareness of career pathways and address the growing demand for STEM skills in the resources and energy sector.
In a recent session, Rod introduced students to surveying in mining, highlighting the diverse tasks, technologies and opportunities the role offers. He explained blasting concepts and other high-interest activities that show how STEM applies in mining environments, giving students a hands-on, relatable experience.
Rod’s motivation comes from wanting to inspire young people, including those the same age as his son. Seeing their enthusiasm and curiosity drives him to continue supporting the program.
Thiess is proud to support initiatives that encourage the next generation of STEM professionals. Thanks Rod for helping bring the Bright Future STEM program to life.
