Leinster community school’s big day out at Rocky’s

Leinster Community School students and teachers got in the driver’s seat during their excursion to Rocky’s Reward.

 
No one was late for school on the much-anticipated day trip which was hosted by Thiess and BHP.
The goal of the day was to build an understanding of the mining industry, learn how nickel mining contributes to daily life and see firsthand, the professions and operational career paths that are locally available.
The school group undertook a comprehensive site tour asking lots of questions along the way to site leaders and engineers.
Highlights of the day were the chance to sit in the driver’s seat of a truck, get a wave from the bucket of excavator 6 from the Cutback 3 lookout, tour the nickel concentrator with BHP and enjoy a farewell sausage sizzle lunch.
Project Manager Rocky’s Reward Shaune Finn said the team was proud to host the school.
“This is an important initiative because some kids in town don’t understand what their parents do each day when they get to work,” Shaune said.
“In partnership with BHP we’ve been able to support the education of local students but also demonstrate to the wider community our commitment to proactive, genuine and positive community engagement.
“Our team put in an incredible effort to make this a safe, informative and fun trip for the school. I would like to sincerely thank each person who gave their time to make the day a success.”
School Principal Brendon Wade said he was very grateful to Thiess and BHP for the opportunity to visit the site.
“This site visit provided our students and staff with a fantastic opportunity to learn about where their parents work,” Brendon said.
“We are so appreciative of the efforts made by Thiess and BHP that enabled this visit to happen. Thank you very much!”
