Reducing our environmental footprint at Wahana

Reducing our environmental footprint at Wahana

Our Environment team at Wahana in Indonesia have launched the ‘One Person One Tree’ program as a part of Thiess’ commitment to a sustainable future.

Inspired by World Environment Day earlier this year, and in partnership with our client, the program encourages employees and subcontractors to plant one tree around the main office, workshop and reclamation areas on site.

The teams’ target is to plant 985 trees, one from every employee. They have already reached 70 per cent of the target.

As part of the program, and to ensure its ongoing sustainability, the team have created a mini nursery to plant fruit seeds for employees to harvest. Employees can eat the fruit together and then re-sow the fruit seeds.

Deputy Project Manager, July Osmon Simanjuntak, said this program helps to educate employees around reforestation and returning land to its original condition.

“It highlights nature, climate and pollution action by encouraging people to live sustainably.”

“The involvement and collective effort also demonstrate the team’s awareness of revegetation efforts, highlighting their commitment to minimise environmental degradation so that the land can be returned to its initial condition.”

At Thiess, we’re committed to minimising our environmental footprint through responsible mining practices and acting on climate change. The ‘One Person, One Tree’ program helps support and reiterate our commitment to the Sustainability Development Goals.

Well done and thanks to all our employees involved!
