Craig Tyson and Jordan Gunter - Making their mark
At Thiess, we recognise the importance of building meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities, founded on trust, cultural understanding and shared values. Over the weekend, Canada marked National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to honour the contributions of Indigenous leaders who are shaping a more inclusive and respectful mining industry. Two of those leaders are Craig Tyson and Jordan Gunter.
Craig Tyson, Indigenous Community Relations & Business Development Specialist and proud member of Wahnapitae First Nation, has dedicated more than 25 years to community and cultural leadership. In addition to his role at Thiess, Craig serves on Wahnapitae’s Chief and Council and chairs the community’s Cultural Committee. He is also the Traditional Firekeeper, entrusted with guiding sacred fires and ceremonies that carry deep meaning across generations.
“I see my role as helping create understanding,” Craig shares. “Not just between organisations and communities, but between people—by listening, learning and showing up with respect.”
Craig’s work bridges industry and community. He’s helped lead joint ventures, supported economic development initiatives, and ensured Indigenous voices are valued in key decisions, always guided by honesty, humility and respect.
Jordan Gunter, Construction Manager at Thiess and a proud member of the Eastern Woodland Métis Association, brings over 20 years of construction experience across Canada. With a background as a civil engineering technician, Jordan is known for his practical leadership and commitment to building high-performing, safety-driven teams, particularly in some of the country’s most remote and demanding locations.
“Leading well means listening first, acting with integrity, and staying grounded in the basics, safety, quality, and people,” says Jordan.
Since joining Thiess in late 2024, Jordan has quickly made his mark by living these values. For him, success is about how you get there—and the legacy you leave behind on both people and projects.
Outside of work, Jordan is deeply connected to his community in New Brunswick, where he enjoys camping with his family, officiating hockey games, and snowmobiling in the winter.
Today and every day, we’re proud to work alongside Indigenous professionals like Craig and Jordan, who lead with purpose, honour their culture, and inspire us all to build a more inclusive future.
