Make Your Mark: Laura Goldrick
Laura Goldrick, a first-year electrical apprentice at Thiess, brings a natural curiosity and love for hands-on problem-solving to her role.
Growing up inspired by her father, who worked in the mines, Laura chose to follow a similar path, drawn to the challenges and rewards of the electrical trade. “I've always been a hands-on person, understanding how things work,” she shares. “Electrical work fascinates me because you can't always see the obvious problem—you have to figure it out, which is both challenging and rewarding.”
In her first year, Laura has embraced the technical variety her role offers. From fault-finding to installing power outlets and lights, to working on the autonomous gear that keeps operations running smoothly, she enjoys how no two days are alike. “The work is varied, and every day is different,” she says. “Running the whole site electrically with my team pushes me and keeps things exciting.”
Laura is a strong advocate for more women entering trades like hers. She highlights the versatility of the electrical field, which offers skills that can open doors in multiple industries and roles. “The skills I’m learning now will allow me to grow into other roles, like becoming an electrical engineer,” she explains. “It’s also a trade that can take you places—you can travel with these skills.”
Beyond her technical work, Laura is passionate about helping others succeed in their careers. She has become involved in recruitment and mentoring initiatives, motivated by her desire to give back. “I love helping and supporting people,” she says. “I know how daunting it can be starting out in this industry, and by sharing my experiences, I hope to make it a little easier for others to feel confident in their decisions.”
When she’s not at work, Laura enjoys spending time outdoors with her family, friends, and her dog. She often goes camping, plays Oztag and netball, and loves the thrill of 4WD driving. “I’ve been going on adventures with my dad since I was little, whether it’s fishing, surfing, or cooking up a storm. It’s something I’ve always enjoyed.”
Laura’s journey with Thiess is just beginning, and with her passion, dedication, and love for her trade, there’s no doubt she has a bright future ahead.
