Thiess continues partnership with the International River Foundation for World Rivers Day

Thiess has continued its work with the International River Foundation (IRF), further showcasing the integration of IRF’s vision for healthy and resilient rivers with our commitment to environmental and community sustainability— this time in the Lockyer Valley in Australia and in the Makarti Village in Indonesia.

Thiess in collaboration with the IRF, SEQ Council of Mayors, Mayor Tanya Milligan and the Lockyer Valley Regional Council, joined forces to celebrate World Rivers Day. Together our team of volunteers got their hands dirty planting 300 trees in the Lockyer Valley, making a direct contribution to river resilience and long-term riverbank stabilisation. This team efforts plays a vital role in supporting the local community through preserving the health of local creeks and waterways in the upper catchment of the Brisbane River.

In Indonesia Thiess’ MSJ team worked with the Makarti Village government and community, Asiana Recycle Indonesia (ARI) and the local Environment Agency to conduct a clean-up day on the Makarti River. The initiative aimed to highlight and educate residents about the critical role that rivers play as a source of life and to encourage active participation in efforts to conserve and maintain them. This river clean up resulted in the collection 367kg of primarily plastic waste which will be processed by the ARI team. Watch the video below to learn more about the tangible impacts achieved for our Indonesian community members.

World Rivers Day is a global celebration that shines a spotlight on rivers and the vital role they play in ecosystems, economies, and communities. It’s a day to raise awareness about the need to protect and restore rivers, ensuring they remain healthy and resilient for future generations. By participating in these events, we not only contribute to the local environment but also align our efforts with a global movement dedicated to the protection and sustainable management of river systems.

For many years, Thiess has been at the forefront of responsible mining services, consistently pioneering sustainable practices. This partnership continues to reflect our deep commitment to sustainability. Together, we're making a lasting impact on river ecosystems and communities, both locally and globally.
