About the opportunity
Thiess has been entrusted with maintaining a fleet of EX5600 excavators along with our client's heavy equipment in Arizona. This exciting project is a chance to showcase our expertise, develop a strong maintenance operation, and create pathways for future growth.
There’s potential for expansion to a full-site maintenance program for the client’s broader fleet, offering a rare opportunity to establish a world-class operation and shape its future success.
We’re calling for Maintenance Managers with a focus on excavator and heavy-equipment maintenance to join us and help deliver operational excellence.
This role’s expected duration is 2-3 years, with opportunity to continue at other Thiess sites in North America.

Who we’re looking for
We’re looking for Maintenance professionals who are passionate about heavy-equipment maintenance, bringing technical expertise, leadership, and a dedication to safety.
Skill requirements:
- At least 3 years' experience as a Maintenance Manager in a mining environment
- Experience in having difficult conversations and conflict resolution
- Experience in performance management, mentoring and training
- Experience with Fleet/Equipment Lifecycle management
- Experience with preventative and predictive maintenance programs
- Experience with budget planning and cost control
- Experience in negotiation and vendor control
- Experience with KPI development and management
- 6+ years' experience delivering high quality repair work on a wide range of mining makes and models
- Experience working in an open cut mining environment
- Experience working shift work (Days and Nights) up to 14 days straight
- Be resilient and flexible, embracing a startup mentality
- Experience in prioritization and delegation
- Problem solving skills, must be proactive and innovative. Lead with an optimistic mindset
- Safety focused, leads by a standard that or higher of the company's expectations
- Preferred, but not required:
- Experience travelling and engaging with international cultures
- Must have’s:
- Ability to obtain and maintain a satisfactory National Police Clearance. Please note that visa eligibility may be dependent upon the outcome of such checks
- Fit for duty to work in hot and cold environments, and at elevation between 900-1400 metres
- Must have a trade certificate as a mechanic or electrician
What you’ll do
- You will be required to carry out heavy equipment maintenance on a wide range of equipment across Thiess' US operations
- Tasks include general maintenance, servicing, technical diagnostics, major component changeout and overhaul
- Fleet is primarily Caterpillar, Hitachi and Komatsu. Others include Liebherr trucks and Cummins engines
- You will also be training and mentoring other staff, sharing Australian standards and incorporating them into US standards
- Oversee site-based Thiess operations within the US
- Work closely with Supervisors, Area Managers and HSE to ensure operations are run safely and effectively
- Generate detailed reports of operations and ensure strict deadlines are adhered to
- Budget and plan for future operations based on guidance from senior executives
- Oversee spending and manage day to day PnL
- Liaise with clientele and build genuine and respectful relationships
