A lasting legacy at Prominent Hill: AMY Nominees and Thiess

Thiess’ 20-year chapter at the Prominent Hill copper-gold mine in South Australia has drawn to a close as long-term partner A.M.Y. Nominees Pty Ltd begins an important new chapter of its own.

Thiess’ involvement at Prominent Hill began in 2005 with feasibility work and continued through successive development phases and ownership changes, from Oxiana and OZ Minerals through to BHP.

Over the past two decades, Thiess has successfully delivered full open-pit mining services, including drill and blast, load and haul, surveying, mine planning, geotechnical and geology services.

In 2018, Thiess completed the Malu open pit at a depth of 520 metres. As the operation transitioned to underground-only production, the team continued to deliver run-of-mine management, crusher feed and ore rehandling.

One of Thiess’ proudest achievements has been its support of Indigenous participation through an eight-year joint venture with the Traditional Owners, the Antakirinja Matu-Yankunytjatjara Aboriginal Corporation (AMYAC), and its wholly owned subsidiary A.M.Y. Nominees.

Together, Thiess and A.M.Y. Nominees built a partnership based on trust, respect and a shared vision for capability development, business growth and sustainable employment.

A.M.Y. Nominees has since secured the largest Indigenous contract awarded by BHP in South Australia.

While Thiess’ mining services contract has ended, its connection to Prominent Hill will continue with underground mining specialist PYBAR, part of the Thiess Group, signing a three-year contract in 2025 to carry out raise-boring works at the site.
