Thiess recognised at Oyu Tolgoi’s 8th drawbell blast ceremony
Thiess has celebrated a key milestone at Oyu Tolgoi’s underground operation, with our loader operator Dandarjamts Chuluun selected to ring the bell marking the eighth drawbell blast.
The drawbell blast represents a major step in underground mining, enabling ore to flow from the orebody to the production level before being transferred for crushing and copper processing.
The milestone reflects the completion of extensive development, ground support and quality assurance activities by teams across the site.
The bell‑ringing tradition recognises the experience, commitment and contribution of underground miners. A drawbell blast can only proceed after all works meet the highest standards of quality and safety.
Thiess Development Superintendent Tserenkhuu Dashtsengel said: “On the evening of 20 January, we were informed that a Thiess team member would be chosen for this milestone event.
“Our leaders came together and unanimously nominated Dandarjamts in recognition of his commitment, professionalism and contribution to the project.”
Oyu Tolgoi Underground Senior Manager Craig Day said: “This milestone represents the strong collaboration across teams. The quality of work delivered has ensured the success of this blast and supports long‑term production readiness.”
Thiess continues to lead several critical work packages at Oyu Tolgoi, including ground support and development works for the underground mining panel P2N and exclusive responsibility for P2S undercut development. The team has consistently exceeded monthly development targets, contributing significantly to the mine’s progress.
