Thiess teams take on Hunter Valley Mines Rescue Competition 2026

When every second counts, preparation matters.

Earlier this month, our Mount Pleasant Operation and Mt Arthur South teams put their skills to the test at the annual Hunter Valley Mines Rescue Competition.

Competing against teams from across the industry, the Mount Pleasant Operation team secured an impressive eighth-place finish in its fourth year of competition, while Mt Arthur South placed ninth in its debut year.

The competition challenges teams across a range of rescue disciplines, including industrial firefighting, vertical rope rescue, search and rescue operations and more. Through realistic emergency scenarios, participants are tested on their teamwork, communication, decision-making and ability to remain composed under pressure.

Months of dedicated preparation came together on the day as both teams demonstrated their capability and readiness to respond effectively in challenging situations.

Mining Technology Technician at Mt Arthur South and team captain, Shaun Webber, said: "The competition pushes you beyond normal training and gives you a chance to test your skills in realistic emergency situations. It's rewarding to know that the training we do helps ensure we're ready to respond when people need us most."
