ICT and Health teams collaborate to donate 14 unused mobile phones to a Brisbane Hospital

As part of the 2024 16 Days of Activism against Gendered Violence campaign, the ICT and Health teams collaborated to donate 14 unused mobile phones to a Brisbane Hospital.

Leigh Ruch who works as a Health and Wellbeing Advisor at Thiess, will donate the phones to Logan Hospital social work department. Currently, Leigh works at the hospital part-time, as a nurse and midwife.

Leigh said: “I am so pleased that this simple and practical donation, for old phones that would have been previously discarded and no longer used by Thiess, will now support the many vulnerable communities and people across Australia.”

These phones will provide emergency support to patients in a critical situation, where they may not be able to use, or access their own mobile phone.

Johnny Serrano, Chief Information Officer at Thiess said: “Donating mobile phones to domestic violence charities is more than just giving a device—it’s offering a lifeline, a voice, and a pathway to safety for those in desperate need. It’s inspiring to know that something as simple as an unused phone can help someone rebuild their life and find hope again. Being part of a cause that transforms lives is fulfilling, and the ICT team are honoured to make even a small difference in such a powerful way. “

DV Safe Phone collect old phones that can be donated and pass them onto registered DV organisations, law enforcement agencies, and safe houses to victims of DFV all across Australia, and these old phones help them with safety planning and escape planning.
