Thiess delivers full service mining operations at Pembroke Resources’ Olive Downs Complex in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, providing a complete scope of mine planning, overburden removal, drill and blast, load and haul, water management and the rehabilitation of final landforms.
Our full‑service mining approach at Olive Downs reflects our commitment to operational excellence, technological leadership and responsible resource development
Working in partnership with Pembroke Resources, Thiess is tailoring its mining development capability, technology leadership and strong ESG credentials to support the long‑term production of high‑quality steelmaking coal. Both organisations share a clear vision for the Olive Downs Complex to set global benchmarks in sustainable mining, with a focus on using technology to deliver exceptional operational, environmental and community outcomes.
Thiess has reinforced this commitment by establishing the world’s first mining operation to simultaneously deploy Cat® MineStar™ Command for hauling and Command for drilling solutions. The company has successfully commenced fully autonomous hauling and drilling from a purpose‑built facility on site, enabled by a private LTE network that supports the safe operation of more than 85 connected assets within the autonomous operating zone.
This milestone demonstrates Thiess’ capability to transition a greenfield project to fully autonomous operations within 18 months, exceeding key performance targets early in the rollout. At full capacity, the site currently operate a fleet including 15 autonomous Cat 794 AC trucks, a further 15 autonomous Cat 793F trucks and three autonomous Cat MD6310 drills - all contributing to improved safety, operating hours, cycle efficiency and cost outcomes.
The introduction of autonomous operations is also supporting sustainability efforts through enhanced skill development, reduced diesel consumption and extended component life. Thiess has already upskilled more than 280 team members to support the deployment of this technology, reinforcing safe, reliable and consistent operational performance.
Thiess and Pembroke Resources remain aligned in their ambition to establish Olive Downs as a world‑class, low‑impact mining operation that reflects best‑practice environmental management and contributes to a lower‑carbon future. The partnership continues to create opportunities for local suppliers, regional businesses and a diverse workforce with the project transitioning into steady state long‑term operations, producing up to 6mt of ROM coal per year and moving more than 60m BCM of waste in the process.
