Johnathon leads excellence at Prominent Hill

With a desire to be consistently challenged, Thiess’ Johnathon Frankish has spent the past seven years building a successful career in the Australian mining industry.

Joining our Prominent Hill operations as Workshop Leading Hand seven-years ago, Johnathon’s maturity, persistence and work ethic helped him transition into the role of Workshop Supervisor.
“At Thiess, there is always room for growth and progression. I am constantly learning new skills, developing and challenging myself personally and professionally,” Johnathon said.
In his current role, Johnathon oversees maintenance of workshop infrastructure, tooling and workshop fleet to ensure they comply with Thiess and national standards.
“When I was younger, I received a great piece of advice from my father which was not to rush, or be too hasty, that patience will give you the results. It’s stuck with me to this day, and I apply it in everything I do – be it at work or home.
Since joining the Thiess team, Johnathon has participated in several onsite social activities including creating outfits for a workshop fancy dress competition.
“I was tasked by my superior to make hula dresses using old air filters and reeds from a nearby dam to ensure that our workshop won the fancy dress at the social clubs Luau,” he laughed.
What do you love most about your team? What have you learnt from them?
I am so grateful for my team. They’re all team players; they’re the best bunch to work with.
We have grown and evolved together, continually learning from each other.
How does your team work to keep everyone safe everyday?
My honest approach and repour with my team ensures everyone is home safe every day.
I make sure that everyone feels empowered to ask for help or give direction where needed.
No job is too big or too small, and there is no such thing as ‘dumb’ questions.
Describe yourself in three words?
Honest, caring and resilient.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
Super strength – It would come in handy for work undoing bolts and fitting heavy components. It would also help at home when moving furniture from one room to another and back again, upon my partner's request.
If you could choose three people (dead or alive) over for a dinner party, who would they be and why?
• Ned Kelly - I have read books on his life but would love to hear his side to the story
• Elon Musk – to pick his brain on business and to understand how he built his empire
• Amy Yates – (my better half and best mate) to bring some cheek to the dinner party and it would be rude not to invite her.
What skills do you need for your position?
Technical skills, attention to detail, patience, problem-solving skills and solid communication skills.
