Bringing specialist healthcare closer to local families

More than 1,100 children in Mongolia’s South Gobi region received specialist medical check-ups this month through a community health program supported by Thiess.

Delivered in partnership with paediatric specialists from the National Center for Maternal and Child Health (NCMCH), the program visited Tsogttsetsii and Tsogt-Ovoo soums from 5–7 June, providing children aged 0–18 with access to specialist health assessments and diagnostic services.

Thiess supported the program by sponsoring accommodation, meals and transportation for the medical team, helping bring essential healthcare services closer to local families.
More than 800 children received medical examinations in Tsogttsetsii, while more than 300 children were assessed in Tsogt-Ovoo.

Now in its fourth year, the program has provided health services to approximately 3,500 children since 2022. It supports early detection of health concerns and helps connect children with specialist treatment when required.

A key benefit of the program is ongoing access to care. Children who require additional treatment are referred to NCMCH for follow-up appointments, while around 60–70 children needing regular health monitoring can receive services locally without travelling long distances.

The medical team provided examinations across several specialties, including:

• ophthalmology
• neurology
• ear, nose and throat (ENT)
• internal medicine
• surgery and urology
• ultrasound diagnostics
• speech therapy.

By improving access to specialist healthcare services, the program is helping children and families in remote communities receive the care they need, while strengthening Thiess’ long-term commitment to supporting local communities.
