Flexible return to work - Anthea's story

Thiess’ Assistant Company Secretary has had a smooth transition returning to work, after a 16 year absence from the workforce.

After taking a career break to raise four children, Anthea returned to work on a part-time basis to help manage a busy home life and family commitments.
Anthea’s story is one that many working parents can relate to, but she said her experience has been positive, thanks to open lines of communication and a flexible approach to working.
“As Assistant Company Secretary in the Legal Team, I support Corporate and Compliance functions, in what is a busy and oftentimes demanding role,” Anthea said.
“It was a little daunting returning to work after being out of the workforce for a number of years, but I found the support mechanisms in place really helpful.
“I work in an inclusive team environment at Thiess, and I’ve taken advantage of joining a “Lean-In” group – an internal support network that has helped meet people in our business.
“We meet once a month and talk about various topics relevant to our work life. Our support group consists of people from all levels and business units across our business – from Legal to ICT to Innovation & Technology.

“This has helped me form some great connections outside of my immediate team.

Anthea said being supported to work flexibly has been critical to successfully re-entering the workforce.
“I work four days a week but have worked longer or extra days when needed. I can then use this time in lieu for things like appointments or school holidays, which has been fantastic.
“Flexibility is a two-way street. It’s about being flexible to business need, but also recognising that job and personal life can co-exist amicably and finding what works to support both needs.
“Prior to joining Thiess, I worked overseas and the lack of flexibility in roles was a contributing factor to relocating back to Australia.
“I’m glad to be now in a supportive environment where I don’t have to choose between work and family.”
