Technology-led land restoration at Muswellbrook Coal Mine Rehabilitation project

Thiess Rehabilitation made significant progress with technology-led post-mining land restoration works at the Muswellbrook Coal Mine rehabilitation project in 2024. This mine holds special significance for Thiess, whose founders, the Thiess Brothers, were awarded the contract to commence the mine’s open cut operations in 1944. This marked both the start of Thiess’ mining business and their presence in the Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia.

By the end of 2025, 159 hectares of post-mining land is expected to be restored, with the site returned to a mix of native ecosystems and improved pastures. Through 2024, Thiess Rehabilitation completed six highwall blasts to create a final landform that is sustainable and complements the landscapes of the surrounding region. Civil works were progressively delivered on areas undergoing rehabilitation to support a post-mining landform that delivers a combination of native and pasture land uses. The client is also progressing plans to develop the Muswellbrook Clean Industries Precinct at the site once final landform rehabilitation has been completed, further enhancing sustainability benefits.
