Tracey Lambert reflects on the impact of the Tori Cowburn Scholarship

In 2025, Tracey Lambert was awarded the Tori Cowburn Scholarship, established by Thiess in memory of colleague Tori Cowburn, who tragically lost her life in the Hunter Valley wedding bus tragedy. Awarded annually, the scholarship supports a local Hunter Valley female undertaking university studies in a mining-related discipline.

A lifelong Hunter Valley local, Tracey Lambert is in the first year of a Bachelor of Accounting at the University of New England while continuing to work full-time as an Administration Officer at Mount Pleasant Operation.

Here, Tracey shares what the scholarship means to her, and reflects on her studies, her work at Mount Pleasant Operation and her aspirations for the future.

Q: What has receiving the Tori Cowburn Scholarship meant to you?

A. Receiving the Tori Cowburn Scholarship was incredibly meaningful, especially knowing that Tori worked in the same field. I feel honoured to be part of something that celebrates her memory and carries her legacy forward.

Q: Can you tell us a little about your connection to the Hunter Valley?

A. I’ve lived in the Hunter Valley all my life, so I have a strong connection to the local community. It’s a place I’m proud to call home, and I’m grateful to be building my career here while continuing my studies.

Q: What inspired you to study a Bachelor of Accounting?

A. I wanted to try something different, and my experience working with the Mount Pleasant Operation finance team sparked an interest in accounting. I’ve enjoyed learning more about the field, so studying a Bachelor of Accounting felt like a natural next step.

Q: How will the scholarship support you as you continue your studies and professional development?

A. The scholarship has made it financially possible for me to begin my degree, particularly as living costs continue to rise. It has eased some of the pressure of balancing full-time work, family life and study, while supporting me to develop my skills and work towards a career in accounting.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working at Mount Pleasant Operation?

A. What I enjoy most about working at Mount Pleasant Operation is the people and culture. They make it a great place to come to work each day.

Q: Since receiving the scholarship, what have been some of your key highlights and learnings?

A. A key highlight has been the support I’ve received, as well as the opportunities I’ve had to learn and grow. It’s been encouraging to have that support as I work towards my career goals.

Q: Looking ahead, what are you most excited about as you continue building your career in mining and resources?

A. Mining is an important part of the Hunter Valley, and Thiess has a long history in the region. Having lived here all my life, I’m excited to keep learning and growing my career in an industry and community I’m closely connected to.
